Business for Good: A Workshop Series

Join us to learn alongside other like-minded entrepreneurs looking to do business for good.

This free workshop series is intended for:
  • those wanting to expand their business knowledge, tools and resources;
  • social entrepreneurs looking to deepen their impact and grow their businesses; and
  • business leaders interested in incorporating more social or environmental values into their business practices.
At some of the workshops, attendees will be encouraged to apply learned concepts and theories to their own businesses. Having a business is certainly not necessary, but we recommend attendees be business or entrepreneurial minded. The Business for Good series includes four workshops - attend one or all four - the choice is yours! Attending each workshop is optional, although the knowledge gained throughout the series will be complementary.

Measuring your Impact

Thursday, April 5, 2018 1:30pm to 4:30pm

Invest Ottawa, 7 Bayview Road, Training Room

This workshop will provide an overview of impact measurement, dive into the benefits of ingraining it into a social enterprise’s business plan and introduce useful tools to aid in tracking social and environmental impact. Jonathan Wade of Social Delta will introduce the topic and answer your questions around measuring impact. Stefan Hostetter from the Centre for Social Innovation (CSI) will provide a walkthrough of the CSI Impact Dashboard, a tool that allows you to track, visualize, understand and share your impact. Doing good is one thing, being able to show it is another!

Come prepared to explore what should be tracked, why it’s important and what measuring impact can do to validate and grow a social enterprise.

Who’s your customer and what do you charge?

Friday, April 6, 2018 1:30pm to 4:30pm

Invest Ottawa, 7 Bayview Road, Training Room

Led by Paula Hopkins and George Borovec, Entrepreneurs in Residence at Invest Ottawa, this workshop will spend some time looking at your customer. Far too often this category is not clearly identified by business owners which leads to business failure. Determining who your customer is and the value you bring to them is key to success.

In this session we will discuss customer validation; product-market fit; discuss pricing models and a profit/loss analysis; and from the social enterprise lens, you will learn how to identify and differentiate customers and beneficiaries.

Financial and Legal Structures

Thursday, April 12, 2018 9:30am to 12:30pm

Invest Ottawa, 7 Bayview Road, Training Room

This workshop will host 2 guest speakers with expertise in both the financial structures of social enterprises and the organizational structures of socially-minded businesses. A question and answer period will be held at the completion of these talks.

Christa Casey from Welch LLP. will be discussing cash flow management techniques for social enterprises.

Jonathan Wade of Social Delta will be providing an overview of the different organizational structures that maximize opportunities for socially-minded businesses, including social enterprises, hybrid corporations, cooperatives and B Corps.

Telling Your Story

Friday, April 13, 2018 9:30am to 12:30pm

Invest Ottawa, 7 Bayview Road, Training Room

Join Peter Georgariou from Karma Dharma while he discusses the topics of social enterprise marketing, branding and exposure. All businesses need to understand their market and how to reach them. However, once you reach them you need to have a brand that sticks. Peter will help you understand how to build your brand, how to profile your customers and will discuss ways to create your marketing strategy. Peter will be joined by Entrepreneurs in Residence at Invest Ottawa, Stephen Davis and George Borovec.
