However, campaign financing in municipalities across Canada is a lot more complicated than that. In this Brown Bag Lunch, we'll learn about the role that the private development industry plays in shaping our local democracies, using new data from the 2022 Ottawa election, and discuss how residents and legislators can ensure fairer planning processes that prioritize affordable housing and livable communities rather than corporate developer profits. Sam Hersh is an activist and political organizer who has been involved in several electoral and issue-based campaigns, having worked to elect two City Councillors to City Hall and been involved in different movements that support social, environmental and economic justice that fight for systemic change at different levels of government. Originally from Montreal, Sam moved to Ottawa in 2016 to pursue a Master's degree at Carleton University. In the time since he has helped lead Horizon Ottawa, an organization that seeks to bridge the gap between electoral and movement-based politics. --- Brown Bag Lunches are lunch & learns organized by Impact Hub Ottawa, led by community members, and open to all. About this event:

We would like to believe that our local elections are funded by small donations from our civically engaged neighbours. However, campaign financing in municipalities across Canada is a lot more complicated than that.

In this Brown Bag Lunch, we’ll learn about the role that the private development industry plays in shaping our local democracies, using new data from the 2022 Ottawa election, and discuss how residents and legislators can ensure fairer planning processes that prioritize affordable housing and livable communities rather than corporate developer profits.

Sam Hersh is an activist and political organizer who has been involved in several electoral and issue-based campaigns, having worked to elect two City Councillors to City Hall and been involved in different movements that support social, environmental and economic justice that fight for systemic change at different levels of government. In the time since he has helped lead Horizon Ottawa, an organization that seeks to bridge the gap between electoral and movement-based politics.
