SUMMARY:Someone stuffed AI into your product – Now what?
DESCRIPTION:It’s the moment every UX person dreads: AI hype hits your product roadmap\, and suddenly there’s a chatbot nobody asked for popping up in your app. \nAI features often get shipped without the user testing they desperately need. So what do you do when you inherit a product or service that needs a UX reality check? Generic usability heuristics weren’t built for LLMs\, probabilistic outputs\, or collaborative interactions. \nJoin us for a practical\, hands-on session where you’ll learn a specialized heuristic framework designed specifically for evaluating AI applications. Then test it out on a real LLM-powered chatbot. \nDATE TIME: Tuesday\, February 17\, 2026\, 6:00-8:00 pm. \nLOCATION: In-Person Event at Impact Hub Ottawa (123 Slater Street\, 7th floor\, Ottawa\, ON K1P 5H2). \n\nNOTE: The venue is in a high-rise building\, and the entry doors on the ground floor/street level lock automatically at 7pm.\n\nREGISTRATION: (Free!) https://www.meetup.com/capchi/events/313222912/ \n\nAbout Julia Milner \nJulia Milner is a Principal UX Research consultant at Emids\, specializing in AI applications in the healthcare domain. She has worked with clients ranging from startups to established global companies. Previously\, she worked at Statistics Canada and Engineers Without Borders. She’s a proud grad of the Human-Centred Design program at Algonquin College (RIP) and studied Architecture at the University of Calgary. \n– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –  \nA Space for Community and Support \nBeyond the talk\, we recognize the importance of fostering a strong UX and design community—especially in light of the recent news about Algonquin College suspending its Human-Centred Design program. The decision to halt new student admissions after Fall 2025 is a significant loss to the local UX ecosystem. \nNow\, more than ever\, we must come together to support\, uplift\, and advocate for the growth of human-centered design. Events like this serve not only as learning opportunities but also as spaces for connection\, mentorship\, and solidarity. \nWe hope to see you there. Let’s keep the spirit of UX alive.\nSpread the word and bring a friend!

SUMMARY:Stories Before Systems: Human Connection in the Age of AI
DESCRIPTION:In a time when algorithms shape much of what we see and share\, how do we ensure that human connection remains at the center of our work? This talk will explore the power of personal storytelling in the age of AI\, emphasizing how lived experience narratives reduce isolation\, foster belonging\, and cultivate compassion across communities. Drawing from my own experience leading a mental health organization rooted in storytelling\, I’ll share why it’s essential for leaders to model ongoing curiosity\, collaboration\, and vulnerability\, showing that technology can enhance\, but never replace\, the human heart of our work. \n\n\nTogether\, we’ll examine the ethical considerations of storytelling in an AI-driven digital landscape: the responsibility to protect storytellers\, the need to design digital spaces that invite thoughtful engagement\, and the opportunity to challenge algorithmic biases that privilege popularity over meaning. By centring both storytellers and audiences\, and by showing up as leaders who are willing to listen\, learn\, and be vulnerable\, we can harness the promise of AI while protecting what makes us most human: our stories\, our connections\, and our capacity to heal through shared narrative. \n\nJoin us on Wednesday\, February 18th\, from 12 – 1 pm for Hailey Hechtman’s Hub Talk! \nAbout Hailey:\n\nHailey Hechtman is an award-winning mental health leader\, speaker\, and writer\, and the Executive Director of Unsinkable\, a national mental health storytelling charity founded by Olympian Silken Laumann. With over a decade in the social impact sector and having founded the Yukon Distress & Support Line at 24\, she is a respected voice in Canada’s mental health ecosystem\, recognized for her leadership in collaboration\, community-building\, and strength-based\, lived-experience-centred approaches. Hailey also serves as a mentor and coach to nonprofit leaders and as a board advisor to the Women’s Nonprofit Network.

SUMMARY:Exploring AI February 2026
DESCRIPTION:Exploring AI: What does AI mean for decision-making? \nFebruary 27\, 2026 | 3:30 – 5:00PM | Impact Hub Ottawa \nAutonomy is central to our ability to make decisions\, yet we often seek better outcomes than our limited knowledge allows. AI promises to enhance—or even automate—this process\, raising a vital question: how do we embrace technological efficiency without sacrificing our agency? This month in Exploring AI\, we’ll examine how to balance human autonomy with AI integration while mitigating the risks. \nExploring AI is a member-led discussion and peer-learning circle at Impact Hub Ottawa on the last Friday of the month. Whether you’re curious or concerned about AI\, already using it in your work\, or just want to better understand its impact\, we invite you to join in and please feel free to bring a friend or colleague. No technical experience is required to participate! \n Reserve Your Spot
