Building on the energy of the Global Week to #ACT4SDGS, Community Foundations of Canada, Impact Hub Ottawa and dozens of other change-making organisations officially launched Ottawa’s first centre for the Sustainable Development Goals. At the same time, the Impact Hub Global network highlighted its commitment to collaboration in the release of its 2019 Global Impact Report.

Amidst the excitement, we’re reflecting on the goals and commitments that led us here and are shaping our vision for the future.

Looking back

2017 was a big year for Impact Hub Ottawa. At a global level, the Impact Hub network of which we’re a part aligned its strategy with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and was endorsed by the United Nations Office in Geneva as the global network working to achieve these 17 ambitious goals through entrepreneurship and innovation.

At a local level, 2017 was also the year that Impact Hub Ottawa, Community Foundations of Canada, the Equality Fund (formerly the Match International Women’s Fund), and our community of Hubbers and partners came together to create a new shared space at 123 Slater Street. All of this with the ambition to strengthen collaboration and cooperation across our organizations and sectors.

Moving forward

Since then, we’ve watched as Impact Hub members around the world have adopted the SDGs, and as community foundations across Canada have aligned their work and impact under this shared agenda, and we’ve been inspired to see our members drive important and impactful work on so many of the SDGs at a local, national and international level.

Our community has grown to more than 350 members, who are actively working for a more just and sustainable world. The SDGs provide a framework through which we can align our efforts and come together in a more intentional way for collective action. – Katie Miller, Managing Director of Impact Hub Ottawa

Now, in 2019, we’re building on the momentum of the past two years. Globally, the Impact Hub network launched a global campaign with their release of 2019 Global Impact Report, encouraging people to Be Part of the Change for a better world.

Locally, we’re reaffirming our commitment to the SDGs and community-building by welcoming more organizations into our space and being more intentional in supporting our shared alignment with the SDGs. As a new national centre for the Sustainable Development Goals in Canada’s capital, we’re expanding our impact through programs and events that support collaboration among the growing number of individuals and organisations in our space and community.

Our communities find themselves at a crossroads. No single sector can address the SDGs alone. We’re proud to co-create a space like this that brings so many different actors together and helps galvanize action. – Andrew Chunilall, CEO of Community Foundations of Canada.

By expanding the home of many of Ottawa’s social purpose organizations, not-for-profits and start-ups, to nearly 17,000 square feet, we are paving the way to new cross-sector collaborations with government, the private sector and other actors and networks who’ve also committed to advancing the SDGs. Find yourself in the downtown core? Come say hello! Connect with the change-makers in our newly expanded home and be a part of the change we want to see in the world.
